‐‐------------------------------------------‐--------------------------------------
Kantha embroidery is often described as a story of "rags to riches." It is one of the oldest and most sentimental forms of Indian embroidery, originating from the rural heartlands of Bengal (encompassing present-day West Bengal and Bangladesh).
The Beginning: Its history spans over 500 years. One of the earliest written mentions is found in the Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita (a 16th-century text), which describes a homemade Kantha quilt sent to the saint Chaitanya Mahaprabhu by his mother.
The Technique: "The Running Stitch"
Recycling Tradition: In the past, nothing was bought. Women would pull out the colored threads from the borders of their old sarees and use them to embroider the new quilt.
The Stitch: The beauty of Kantha lies in its simplicity. It uses the basic running stitch to ripple through the cloth. This stitch not only created designs but also bound the layers of old fabric together, giving the quilt a wavy, textured finish.
Motifs:
The Lotus: Almost always found in the center (representing the universe/life).
Fish: Symbolizing fertility and prosperity.
Tree of Life: Connecting the earth to the divine.
