Short History of the Bujodhi (Bhujodi) Saree
The Bujodhi saree, traditionally known as the Bhujodi saree, comes from the artisan village of Bhujodi in Kutch, Gujarat. This weaving tradition is over 500 years old, crafted by the Vankar community, who originally wove warm woollen blankets for the nomadic Rabari tribe. Over time, this craft evolved into finely handwoven cotton, wool, and silk sarees. Bhujodi sarees are known for their extra‑weft handwoven motifs, geometric patterns, and eco‑friendly kala cotton. Each saree takes 7–15 days to weave, reflecting the skill and heritage of Kutchi artisans. Today, Bhujodi weaving is recognized globally, with many of its textiles carrying the prestigious GI tag for authenticity.
