The Jamdani saree is one of the finest handwoven textiles of the Bengal region, celebrated for its airy muslin base and intricate extra‑weft motifs. Its roots trace back over two millennia, with early references appearing as far back as 300 BCE, where ancient writers described Bengal’s “flowered muslin” garments woven with artistic precision.
Originating in and around Dhaka (historic Dacca)—especially the weaving centers of Sonargaon, Rupshi, and Narayanganj—Jamdani evolved from Bengal’s legendary muslin tradition. It flourished under Mughal patronage between the 14th and 18th centuries, becoming a prized luxury fabric across Asia and Europe. Mughal emperors favored Jamdani for its sheer texture and floating floral motifs; portraits of Emperor Jahangir even depict him wearing Jamdani-patterned textiles.
The name “Jamdani” comes from Persian—“Jam” meaning flower and “Dani” meaning vase—reflecting the saree's signature floral and geometric designs woven directly into the fabric. These motifs are created using the labor‑intensive extra‑weft technique, where each pattern is added by hand on a traditional loom, thread by thread. Because of this, a single saree can take weeks or even months to complete.
During British rule, Bengal’s muslin and Jamdani industries suffered a severe decline due to competition from British machine-made textiles and restrictive colonial policies. Still, Jamdani survived through the dedication of artisan families who continued weaving across villages in Bangladesh and West Bengal.
In recent decades, Jamdani has experienced a remarkable revival. Bangladesh received UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status in 2013 for its Jamdani weaving tradition, recognizing the craft’s global cultural importance. Today, both Dhakai Jamdani (Bangladesh) and Bengal Jamdani (India) continue this legacy, merging timeless heritage with modern design.
