Command Respect with Quiet Elegance

Exude understated elegance with this authentic Khandua cotton saree, a handloom treasure from Odisha. The saree features a sophisticated grey base adorned with a striking "Chessboard Thikiri" pattern in white across its body. This intricate geometric design, characteristic of traditional Odia weaving, gives the saree a contemporary yet timeless appeal. The look is completed by a contrasting pallu featuring horizontal stripes and distinct motifs, ending with neat tassels. Crafted from breathable cotton, this saree is perfect for draping yourself in comfort and traditional style for work, gatherings, or cultural events.

  • Body: The main body of the saree is a pleasing grey color, covered entirely with an intricate, repeating geometric pattern in white, known as the "Chessboard Thikiri" design.

  • Border: The border is an extension of the body's geometric pattern, defined and framed by crisp white stripes that run along the saree's edges, finishing with a solid grey selvedge.

  • Pallu: The pallu is distinct from the body, featuring a series of horizontal white stripes alternating with grey bands. Between these stripes are rows of small, repeating white arch-like or semi-circular motifs. The pallu is finished with hand-tied white tassels.

It drapes with a natural, structured fall that resists clinging, ensuring you stay comfortable from 9 AM to 9 PM.

Why this fits the 'Officer's Choice':

  • Zero Distraction: No heavy embroidery to weigh you down.

  • All-Day Airflow: Linen is known to be 30% stronger and more absorbent than cotton.

  • Matte Finish: Looks professional under harsh office lighting (no cheap shine).

What is so special in this Saree?

Based on the Geographical Indications (GI) document, here is a rephrased summary of the facts regarding Khandua:

The origins of the Khandua weave date back to the 12th Century AD, and it holds a deep, historical association with the rituals of the Lord Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha.

Nuapatna represents the single largest Khandua weaving cluster in Odisha, where approximately 10,000 artisans operate around 6,000 looms. The craft includes notable varieties such as Nabarangi, Tarabali, and Gitagobinda Bastra. The designs are heavily inspired by the natural world, featuring common motifs such as stars, temples, conch shells, rudrakshya beads, fish, chakras, and lotuses, alongside various animals like swans, peacocks, parrots, deer, elephants, horses, and lions.

Khandua is renowned as a premier example of the single ikat technique. In this process, either the warp or the weft yarn is tied and dyed before weaving begins, resulting in distinctive curvilinear patterns par excellence in the finished textile. These cotton sarees are celebrated for their exceptional softness, fineness, and vibrant colors, often characterized by motifs like feathers on the main body and intricate floral single ikat work on the pallu.
