Origins and Evolution the Bomkai saree traces its roots to the small village of Bomkai located in the Ganjam district of South Odisha, where it was originally woven primarily using coarse cotton. The contemporary style now recognized widely as "Bomkai" developed later, during the late 1980s around the Sonepur region in Western Odisha. This evolution marked a shift toward using finer cotton and silk, focusing heavily on numerous buta or buti (small ornamental) designs, which have since become a defining characteristic of modern Odisha handloom sarees.

Weaving Techniques The creation of these sarees involves a specific weaving process where the warp threads are kept stretched and extended while the weft threads are interwoven within them. To achieve their distinct patterns, artisans utilize various traditional techniques, including Dobby, Jaala, and Jacquard.

Signature Designs and Motifs Bomkai sarees are celebrated for their prominent designs, which often include dancing dolls, chariots, trees, horses, ducks, tortoises, fish, creepers, boita (boats), and the ubiquitous buta/buti patterns.
